Microsoft turns MCP into a distribution channel, with certification and 60 ready servers
The July Dataverse wave adds a partner certification pathway, Bring Your Own MCP governance, and a Microsoft plugin that ships into Claude and Cursor.

The Model Context Protocol stopped being plumbing this week and started being shelf space. In its July Dataverse update, published July 6, Microsoft disclosed that its catalog of ready MCP servers has passed 60 across Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry and Microsoft 365 Copilot, and, more consequentially, opened a certification pathway that lets partners sell their own MCP servers through Partner Center under a dedicated "Apps and Agents for M365 and Copilot" offer type.
From protocol to marketplace
Certification is the tell. A protocol needs adapters; a marketplace needs certified vendors, listings and governance, and Microsoft just added all three. Alongside the partner pathway comes "Bring Your Own MCP," which lets enterprises register internal MCP servers under admin approval and visibility controls, the corporate-IT wrapper that makes a CISO comfortable signing off. For the vendors this publication covers, that converts MCP from an integration cost into a go-to-market channel. Build a server that does one job well, certify it, and it becomes purchasable agent capability inside the largest enterprise software estate on earth.
Meeting agents where they run
The quieter half of the announcement cuts the other way. Microsoft's Dataverse coding-agent plugin now ships on the Claude, Cursor and GitHub Copilot marketplaces, meaning Microsoft is distributing its own data platform into rival agent surfaces. The company describes the plugin as delivering "the same Dataverse expertise: intelligent skill routing, enterprise-grade guardrails, and a consistent natural-language experience" wherever the agent happens to live. Even the biggest platform owner has concluded that vendors must meet agents where they run, not the reverse.
The stack keeps settling
When we covered A2A's move to the Linux Foundation, the two-standard picture was already clear: MCP wires agents to tools, A2A wires agents to each other. What is new is the commercial layer growing on top, certification programs, catalogs and governance controls, with MCP's next spec revision due July 28. Standards win when someone builds a business on them. That is now happening on the tools side, at Microsoft scale.
