Alibaba previewed Qwen3.8 Max at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, a 2.4 trillion parameter flagship the company calls one of the most powerful models available today, with coverage landing Sunday from the South China Morning Post and Bloomberg. It is Qwen's first multimodal model above one trillion parameters, handling images, video, and documents.
The headline claim needs its asterisk up front: Alibaba says the model is second only to Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 among frontier systems, and that ranking rests entirely on Alibaba's internal evaluations. No independent benchmarks have verified it, and no model card or per-token price sheet has been published.
Distribution is the pricing story
What Alibaba did publish is how you buy it, and that is the interesting part. Qwen3.8 Max ships through the Token Plan subscription service and through Alibaba's Qoder and QoderWork agentic coding platforms, not through standalone API pricing. It is the subscription-versus-metered split we have covered since the price war opened, now applied to a flagship at launch. Rival Moonshot went the other way: its 2.8 trillion parameter Kimi K3, launched July 16, posted open per-token rates of $3 per million input and $15 per million output, with weights promised by July 27.
The open-weight lever
Alibaba says Qwen3.8 Max weights will be released soon, which would make the second-best-model-in-the-world claim, if it holds, a free download. That pressures everyone's price ladder, from Anthropic's repeatedly extended Fable 5 pricing to a Google now fighting a price war with a delayed flagship. It also lands squarely on the safety desk, because UK evaluators just measured how little the open-weight discount costs an attacker. Cheap intelligence is the product now. Qwen3.8 Max is the biggest unit of it yet announced.
