A third of US knowledge workers now freelance, and the AI orchestrators earn more
Commodity prompt work is deflating while agent-orchestration work inflates. The durable role, per the data, is the person who directs and is accountable for the agents.

The clearest labor dataset of the week points at a split, not a wipeout. Upwork released its 2026 Future Workforce Index on July 14, combining a survey of 2,400 US knowledge workers with platform data, and the headline number is that skilled freelancers now make up 38 percent of US knowledge workers, up from 28 percent a year ago. One caveat up front: every figure here is Upwork's own, and Upwork benefits when freelancing looks strong.
The premium is for managing the agents
Inside the AI work, the report finds a fork. Freelancers who incorporate AI earn 34 percent more per hour than those who do not, and complex AI-augmented roles saw 72 percent growth in volume with a 22 percent earnings bump. But per-contract earnings for generative-AI and creative production work fell 13 percent, the commodity end deflating as fast as the orchestration end inflates. Upwork names the durable role the "AI Orchestrator": talent that can direct, integrate, and be accountable for agents across workflows. Meanwhile 58 percent of full-time employees say they are now considering freelancing, up from 36 percent.
The same story from the demand side
Read against the enterprise beat, the index is the labor market pricing in what the banks are deploying. When nearly nine in ten Citi employees use AI tools and JPMorgan cuts 30 to 40 percent in some units, the work that survives is the work Upwork says pays a premium: directing the agents, not competing with them. It is the optimistic mirror image of the veterans retiring rather than retrain. The skill that earns more is the one that treats the agent as a report to manage, and the market is already paying 34 percent extra for it.
